How to register as self-employed (OSVC) in Czechia

A practical guide to becoming a self-employed sole trader in Czechia: getting a trade licence, registering with the tax office and both insurance authorities, and understanding your ongoing obligations.

01Get a trade licence

Most activities fall under a free trade, which needs only registration at any trade licensing office or CzechPOINT. Craft, tied and concession trades require proof of qualifications. You receive your ICO on registration.

02Register with the tax office

Registration for income tax is usually handled through the single registration form at the trade office, which forwards your details to the tax office, the social security administration and a health insurance company.

03Set up your insurance advances

As a main activity you pay monthly minimum advances for social and health insurance from the start. As a secondary activity alongside a job or study, the rules and minimums are lighter.

04Decide how you will be taxed

Choose between flat-rate expenses and actual expenses, and consider whether the flat-rate tax regime fits you. This choice affects how much you pay and how much paperwork you keep.
